Do You Want To Be a Consultant?

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 by Matt Warman

My client application development coworkers think that consultancy is cool. They think I just roll in on a project, make a lot of money and roll out. I even get paid for overtime hours. Although on average a consultant earns more than full time application development employee, the risk is also higher. An application development team member has his or her challenges certainly, but a consultant has to learn many skills like knowing the application environment, having the right tools, and using my organizational and communication skills to get the job done. A consultant needs to do all of these things and earn the respect of management to continue being a top consultant.

I have to deal with client issues, and I also work on STAR BASE business issues too. With all this on my plate I read about the not so rosy outlook for consultants. Consultants are usually on chopping block first when economic times get tough. The forecast for next year seems down, but the skills necessary to be consultant works in your favor during times like these. A good consultant is knowledgeable, flexible with options, and resilient. You must work a little and harder to be a consultant, but your job options are greater too. So if you think being a consultant is just swooping in to save the day, then leaving in a fancy car, guess again.
